The primary reason a consumer would want to try and unlock their iPhone is to enable use with any cell phone carrier they choose. For example you may live in Canada as I do and be traveling to somewhere in the USA. When you leave your service area you are automatically switched to roaming which is more often than not very costly to use. With an unlocked phone you can take out your primary sim card and use a sim card from a carrier in the USA area where you are. You could even do the same anywhere else in the world. You can also switch phone companys if you are unhappy with their service.
This is a growing trend amongst cell phone users and we see no indications that it will slow down anytime soon. Of course with a large demand for such services, there is always several companys offering solutions. There are typically two general solutions sold and the first one would be software that you are able to download and run to unlock your phone, and the other is basically a guide or ebook that is offered to walk you through the process. The best solution is the software, as many of the guides simply direct you to download software at some point anyways. There is some risk however when you use software that was not created my apple themselves. The people at apple actually frown upon you unlocking your phone because they like you to be stuck with the provider the phone came with as they have agreements with these providers that are worth big bucks!.
